Whether you are majoring in computer science or have taken one of the department's classes, we offer a variety of academic programs, which let you define a course of study supporting your academic and career goals.
With seven full-time faculty and three adjunct professors, we take great pride in our our collegial atmosphere and high degree of interaction with Georgetown's students.
Throughout the academic year, the department hosts a number of social and academic events, such as informal gatherings, colloquia, and seminars. We regularly invite speakers from industry and academia to present their work and broaden the exposure of the Georgetown community to computer science and to information technology.
For undergraduate students interested in graduate studies, exposure to research results in a stronger application for graduate school. Faculty conduct research with students through independent study and through funded projects. Funding can be for the academic year, the summer, or both. It may come from GUROP or from a professor's grant or contract. Students often elect to write a thesis describing their research.
The department holds annual seminars for students interested in pursuing graduate studies. Typically held in the spring, faculty, with students who have recently gained admission, discuss the motivation for pursuing graduate studies, the application process, life in graduate school, and the careers available after its completion.
The department's computer lab is in 330 STM. For relaxing (or relaxed working), there is a student lounge in 341. Wired and wireless access to the Internet is available throughout the third floor. UIS maintains a number of labs throughout campus, including a 24-hour lab in the basement of St. Mary's.
Chats with fellow students and faculty members are excellent ways to discover internship and career opportunities. The department maintains its own list of opportunities, and there are numerous high-tech job portals, such as AfterCollege, Dice, Monster, Yahoo!, and The Washington Post.
