Junior Business Systems Analyst–UIS, Georgetown

Position Goal

You will be working with the Research Regulatory and Compliance Systems division of UIS to provide support for a web applications project team on a variety of technical issues pertaining to the testing, rollout and training for our latest systems project.

This position will:

  1. Give you exposure to the implementation of a real‐world web application for handling of Georgetown’s human research ethics review process.
  2. Apply the technical skills you’ve learned in Computer Science classes.
  3. Give you the responsibilities of a full team member.

Terms: Part time through the end of the Fall 2009 semester. Hours are negotiable.

Start Date: ASAP

The ideal candidate will be:

  1. Highly detail oriented.
  2. Able to work with little direct supervision.
  3. Enthusiastic about working in the technology industry.

Relevant Expertise

  • Conceptual fluency in nested data structures. There will be no coding involved, but you will use a web interface to create and modify and group together data structures that house individual data elements of the system. These elements are imbedded in various areas of the web application to appropriately store and retrieve data from the database.
  • Understanding of advanced Microsoft Word features such as generating tables of contents and using Word Styles to format longer documents.
  • Participating in Quality Assurance testing of our final product. This will involve iterating dozens of possible user paths through the system and taking detailed notes on any anomalies.

The Technology Analyst Development Program is designed to provide you with the skills necessary to position you for success. We are looking for self-directed and results-oriented individuals who possess strong leadership aptitude and interpersonal skills. Program Overview

Technology Analyst Roles

Application Development Analyst - You will design, develop, code, test debug, and document programming applications to satisfy requirements of one or more user areas. You will translate business and technical requirements into technical application specifications.

Application Service Delivery Analyst - You will be responsible for troubleshooting problems within the specific infrastructure platform or function you are assigned to. You will perform day-to-day production support for applications, diagnose problems, and resolve production issues. You will install/remove, configure, and maintain operating system workstations and servers, including web servers, database servers and application servers, in support of business processing requirements. You may also be required to monitor and tune systems to achieve optimum performance levels and analyze system support processes.

Business Systems Analysts - You will work within a team that will identify, assess, and record near-term business needs, recommend business priorities, document business requirements, and provide insight on options, risk and cost vs. benefit. You may be involved in project management, documentation, design specifications, test analysis, user training and even final implementation.

Qualifications

  • A BA/BS degree preferably in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.

The World Bank’s Development Prospects Group (DECPG) has an immediate need for an individual to work at the Bank’s Washington, D.C. office. DECPG provides information, analysis and advice on the impact of trends in the world economy on developing countries, develops and documents the Bank\'s views on the state of the world economy, and produces two of the Bank\'s leading publications: Global Economic Prospects and Global Development Finance.

Duties and Accountabilities

We are looking for a motivated, sharp software developer to assist in the implementation of various innovative web systems and tools. Our projects are ongoing, mission-critical, and require significant self-motivation. The consultant will be working with a team of economists and will be partially responsible for understanding their needs and translating them into working technical systems. The potential exists for a longer term engagement depending on performance.

Selection Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or computer engineering.
  • The ideal candidate will have working knowledge of both PHP5 (ideally using the Symfony framework) and the .NET framework (preferably VB.NET). All candidates must have demonstrable experience with at least one of these programming languages.
  • Strong understanding of database management and abstraction; familiarity with SQL (either MySQL or Microsoft SQL Server)
  • Strong understanding of design patterns and data structures
  • Good understanding of web 2.0 concepts (ideally including experience building AJAX-enabled applications)
  • Strong debugging skills using industry standard tools
  • The ideal candidate will have some exposure to the fundamentals of macroeconomics, statistics, or econometrics (specifically working knowledge of some econometric software, ideally EViews). However, this is not required.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment

Internship–Winrock International

I would like to know if you have any students interested in an IT internship at our Arlington office located at 2121 Crystal Drive.

I need for the student to work approximately 20 hours per week in the afternoons (1 to 5). The position is available to start at the beginning of January and is currently funded for 12 months at the rate of $15/hour without benefits. The duties will include LAN/Desktop support with opportunities to participate in software development and network projects.

Strategic Reserch Consultant–The Constitution Foundation

The Constitution Foundation, a private foundation focused on free online education, seeks 2–3 qualified graduate students to fill the position of Strategic Research Consultant.

Position: The Constitution Foundation is looking for qualified graduate students in the Washington DC area who are able to use their knowledge of Computer Science (and related fields) and subject matter textbooks, course outlines/syllabi and other available educational resources as the basis for unique course outlines to serve as a guideline for the typical domain covered by a general undergraduate Computer Science degree program.  The applicant will play an integral role in the following plan:

  1. Determine the individual courses generally required for an undergraduate Computer Science degree 
  2. Create comprehensive course outlines and descriptions for each course using existing discoverable outlines and educational resources
  3.  Identify Open Educational Resources (OERs) that satisfy various elements of each course
  4. Identify gaps in the curriculum unsatisfied by OERs currently in existence
  5. Catalyze the submission and/or creation of missing curriculum through public relations efforts, OER and University community outreach, private partnerships and a contest with a monetary reward.

Summary:   Graduate student will research existing course materials, identify content intersection, create a hybrid course outline in a uniform, professional format as provided by the foundation.  

Requirements: Undergraduate degree in Computer Science preferred.  Ability to analyze and synthesize data and draft high quality written materials and correspondence required. Candidate must possess strong written communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to quickly identify and resolve problems with minimum supervision.
